Course Overview
This set of articles published by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry explores preventive measures and restorative procedures available in pediatric dentistry. It presents clinical recommendations for the use of pit-and-fissure sealants, guidelines on when restorative procedures are necessary, and the appropriate materials and techniques for children and adolescents.
You’ll also learn to recognize the circumstances in which interim therapeutic restorations may be beneficial, and understand the challenges in restorative care for pediatric patients with special needs. Additionally, the articles go into detail about preventing and eliminating orofacial disease, infection and pain; restoring the form and function of the dentition; and correcting facial disfiguration or dysfunction. After completing all of the articles, you will be able to:
- Cite evidence-based clinical recommendations for the use of pit-and-fissure sealants on the occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent molars in children and adolescents
- Refer to available clinical evidence regarding the effect of dental sealants for the prevention and management of pit-and-fissure occlusal carious lesions in primary and permanent molars, compared with a control without sealants, with fluoride varnishes, or with comparisons of other methods
- Gain information on when restorative dentistry is necessary and what the appropriate materials and techniques are for children and adolescents
- Recognize the circumstances in which interim therapeutic restorations (ITRs) may be beneficial.
